The true story of a dark and wicked event in American history. In 1950, black Mary Ella Harris struggled amid poverty to take care of her rural Mississippi family. Her sharecropper husband drank, gambled, and associated with unsavory white people, one being Leon Turner, a violent ex-convict who desired Mary Ella. The turbulent interaction between Mary Ella and Leon yields a story of the hidden South that explodes one night when Leon bursts into Mary Ella’s home and attacks her family.

One Night of Madness eBook Stokes McMillan

This book sent shivers up my spine! Before reading this book, I was unaware of this tragedy. It is well-written and an easy read--a book that you hate to put down and can't wait to get back to. McMillan does an excellent job of evoking the feeling of what it was like to live (especially as an African American) in Mississippi in the mid-20th century. There are plenty of photographs in the book, taken by the author's father, who was the main local newspaper journalist and photographer covering this gut-wrenching story. Also included are two maps of the area, which I greatly appreciated as a tool to help me follow the events described in the book. Very well done!

In case the publisher or author happens to read this review, and future printings are forthcoming, I did notice one typo that should be corrected. On page 367, in the "Hogjaw Mullen" section, it states that he was once paroled in 1556. I believe that should be 1956. That's just a minor point and certainly did not detract from the overall quality of the book.

One Night of Madness eBook Stokes McMillan Reviews

I was a professor of Aeronautical Engineering at Mississippi State University in the 1970s, and Stokes McMillan was one of my students. I recently became aware that he had written a book, "One Night of Madness".

McMillan has written a meticulously researched book chronicling the heinous murder of three black children in rural Mississippi by three white racists in the winter of 1950.

The book is in the style of a non-fiction novel like Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood", and the story is told with a sensitivity for the people that reminded me of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird". The many characters leap from the pages and bring to life a part of Mississippi history that many would like to ignore, and some would even deny ever happened.

The interaction of the characters, the unfolding of the tragic events leading up to the murders, and the capture and trial of the murderers are skillfully described. After introducing us to the main players in Part 1 McMillan writes in his introduction to Part 2

"Fate is a weaver. With the world her loom and eternity her timetable, she is emotionless in creating the intricate fabric of our lives. Drawing from her lap the colorful threads that are people's flesh and souls, the masterful embroiderer interlaces them into a living tapestry of the human condition - awash with infinitely contrasting shades and qualities. Individual threads may fray with time, but the story told in their warp and weft endures as memory.

` After decades of patient preparation, as an otherwise unexceptional winter approached, Fate began weaving the threads of a new creation, a tapestry of select filaments of peace and conflict, joy and sorrow, prosperity and poverty, black and white, skillfully woven. This unique composition was not to be a masterpiece of beauty to evoke cries of admiration and wonder, but a work of tragedy to call forth wails of anguish and sorrow."

I can't improve on that discourse except to say that I thoroughly enjoyed every page of "One Night of Madness" and enthusiastically recommend it to those who appreciate skillful writing about historical events that become as fresh as the days they happened.
I picked up this book on a Friday and read it over the weekend. Couldn't put it down. Stokes McMillan has done a superb job of telling this fascinating true story of murder and mayhem in Attala County, Mississippi in 1950. It is meticulously written from the inside out with the author's unique perspectives, his having inherited a well detailed scrapbook of the events that took place in and around Kosciusko. I appreciated his commitment to the truth in a time when so many authors are opting to embellish the facts.

I won't soon forget the image of little Nell Harris whimpering and crying out to her father for a drink of water as she lay in a pool of blood while he listened, helpless to come to her aid due to his own serious injuries.

Criminals Leon Turner and the Whitt brothers were so vividly portrayed that I felt like I needed to take a shower to wash off the filth after spending time with them.

As a native Mississippian who grew up in the Delta, I have passed by Parchman Penitentiary many times but never knew the reality of the prisoners inside until now. The Hogjaw Mullens character is begging to come to life on the movie screen.

This story has its heroes, as well, both black and white, who brought integrity into an atmosphere of fear and chaos.

The accompanying award-winning photographs enhance the story perfectly. I found myself staring at them for a long time after I read the book.

This book deserves a wide audience. I can see it going viral as word of mouth spreads.
Mr. McMillen is a captivating writer. He told an emotional story without pulling on the heart strings as he didn't have to pull them, the story it does by itself. He lays down a solid foundation leading to the climax with a cast of many characters. Since I am a native Mississippian and now live here, I can be sensitive to how we're portrayed. Mr. McMillen describes the people and the culture without wearing rose colored glasses and without making excuses. He's honest but yet does not humiliate anyone - even those who probably deserve it. I enjoyed his thoughtful telling of a horrible story I had never heard before. And for those who make the wise choice to read the book - make sure you read the author's acknowledgments.
